Here’s a larger and more fully thought through version of the barn from California. I wanted to try a few larger ones from my studies, and this was a good test. There is a lot more visual interest in the larger one, but the heart of it is still the same as the small study.

No. 306 is the last one I painted while in California. I went there with two 6″ x 8″ PanelPaks and was determined to fill them both up.  It was super hot (100+) so I made sure to be completely in the shade to paint this one. I got a late start and ran out of time so it’s only to the “study” stage.

No. 305 is a view of Emerald Bay at Lake Tahoe. After eating lunch the rest of my family went and toured Vikingsholm while I stayed on the boat to paint. It was a little crazy trying to paint while being rocked by the waves but I was thankful for the view and the shade from a little canopy.

Lake Tahoe is a relatively short drive from where my sister lives and we took a quick overnight trip there during our time in California. I had never been, so it was amazing to see the water and whole Tahoe area. After we had gotten settled in, I walked down to the lake with my pack and painted this along a bank.

We travelled to California last month to visit my sister’s family, and I brought my new “ultralight” kit along for the trip. I had a better feel for what to expect after painting a few ones last year while visiting. For this painting, I drove about 10 minutes away and hiked down near a creek.

After I found my spot and got settled in something massive jumped in the water and then swam across about 20 feet in front of me. I was already a little jumpy due to the snakes and at first I thought it was an alligator. And then I remembered that I was in California and not Florida 🙂 I’m pretty sure it was a deer (it’s called Deer Creek after all) but it still wigged me out.

Before flying back to Atlanta, I wanted to try and fit in one more painting. We were staying near Central Park, so I wanted to give that a shot. I was expecting a quiet Sunday morning in the park, but alas this is New York, and it happened to be the day they were running the City Triathlon. Thousands of people running through and milling around but the nice thing about painting is that you can easily edit them out and make it peaceful again.
