Month: April 2015

Man, what is it about April that makes painting so hard? This is the third year that I’ve officially attempted to do 100 paintings and it seems like each time I hit this massive wall at month four. I don’t know if it’s a cycle with my work or what. But either way it sucks.
I’m going to try some new things starting this weekend to get moving and reboot. I’ve learned that the worst thing to do when you hit a wall is to stop painting. We’ll see how it goes.
No. 288 is another one from my class with Deborah Paris. Taking a class is one way to get through a dip. Not having to think of what to paint takes some of the pressure off and you can focus on making progress vs. trying to “finish” something.

This painting was done along the Chattahoochee river. I got up earlier than normal on a Saturday and hiked down as the sun was coming up to try and get a jump on the light. In hindsight, I think I got started a little too early as there was still a lot of mist and gray light all around.

For the last few weeks I’ve been taking the “Practical Color Mixing for Landscape Painters” class with Deborah Paris from The Landscape Atelier. I’ve admired Deborah’s work for years and it was a real pleasure to be a part of the class.
This painting was one of our assignment and is a study from a J.D. Harding sketch. I don’t want to give any more details about the process though. If you want to learn more you should sign-up take a class. It’s well worth your time and a good investment!
