Month: April 2010

I’m back with No. 27 after a couple week break. Sorry it was radio silence there for a while. We’ll talk about that in a second but for now let’s focus on the painting.

This is the first true landscape for this project and the subject is a park we like to go to (Sharon Springs). They have this quasi garden club that had made this garden with a pathway that winds around. It’s dark back in there and opens up onto this really large field. During college I painted dozens of landscapes and I was more rusty than I thought when this one was started. It took several days of bending it and molding it to get the balance of the light right.

As far as the break goes – for some reason I started on a series of very different (for this project) and very diverse subjects. You’ll see them over the next couple of weeks but I think it was too much change all at once. I thought I was making more progress than I really was and basically hit a buzz saw trying to make all these work.

The title is a nod a Nickle Creek song with the same name. The painting is obviously deals with the literal topic but I also feel like I’m headed into the light at last…

So that’s it for now. It feels great to be back and I’m looking forward to this next set of paintings.

Number 26 brings us back into nature. I’ve been trying to photograph what I can and capture some of what is going on out there with all the flowers but they can pass by pretty quick. One day they are perfect, the next they are gone. As Ferris said “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”

This is actually a Periwinkle bloom or Vinca Minor if you are so inclined. Leslie got a cutting from our neighbor and it has taken over. Neither of our thumbs are that green so I can tell you for a fact that these little guys are hearty.

I’ve got four others in the works and am looking forward to the weekend so I can finish them up.

Here we are at number 25. Hard to believe I am 25% of the way through this but that also means there is a long, long way to go. I’ve been trying to really ramp up the number of new paintings to get a jump on what’s to come because the last couple of weeks have been slow.

So, with number 25 we are back to apples. This is a 10″ x 8″ original oil done on stretched canvas.

With these apples I was playing with the angle/perspective a little more than normal (looking down on them) and also really trying to work the light. You can say a lot with the color of the light, the angle. If done right it will telegraph the time of day, what it’s like outside etc… Sounds easier than it is really is.

I also painted this from life and the brown background is actually one of my T-Shirts. That is one part improvising and one part avoiding going to JoAnn’s. I’m pretty confident in my manhood but avoid that place like the plague.

That’s it for now. The others are progressing nicely and I feel good about Thursday’s actually being able to go live at a decent hour…

Happy Easter! I hope you had a good one.

After a week off from the blog I am back at it. I had gotten behind and it was becoming impossible to start and finish one in a single night. So, I took the last week and got four or five started. It was good to work without any pressure and I’ve got some fun stuff lined up for the next couple of weeks.

So, here is number 24 – a bowl of lemons. I have been trying to push out a little bit. Instead of just a single piece of fruit on a clean background we now have seven different lemons and a bowl. It’s still relatively simple but the complexity it adds to the process is tricky. You have shadows and light all over the place instead of a single problem to solve.

See you Thursday…
