Here’s number 15. Two apples this time and I’m trying to zero in on how to make the two work together while at the same time be smarter with the light. I made the background nice and chocolaty to give it some drama as well. I am so unbelievably tired and still fighting a cold so that’s it for this evening. Later!

I painted this “from life” instead of shooting it and looking at a computer screen. What a difference that makes. I probably spent as much time just sitting there and looking at it as I did painting the canvas.
You think you know what something looks like. An apple, a vase, a piece of cloth. But when you sit down and really look at it your brain just explodes. There are hundreds of colors, angles, lights, transitions. It’s endless. So you take it all in and then have it edit most of it out.
This is what makes someone like Carol Marine so stinking good. An incredible ability to see what’s there combined with a perfect eye for what to leave out. One day…

I feel like Wade, drummer extraordinaire and amateur Neil Diamond impersonator, should be singing the title of number 12.
It’s late so I am gonna make this short. Here we have a single cherry on a nice blue/gray/green background. I went round and round and round with this background before calming it down and letting the cherry do the talking. I’m still trying to get the feel for how these guys move and am *starting* to get it. One more though on Sunday and we are moving on.

No. 11 brings us to the first of the cherries. These little suckers are way harder to paint than I thought and to be honest I was getting pretty down. They were all looking like deformed beach balls and I was not 100% sure where it was going.
But then I had an early birthday party and got some good inspiration that helped get me over the hump. Mom & Dad got me a book that provided inspiration, Meredith & Aaron ironically got the the color that I was missing (a cherry red – hello, McFly?), and Les got me a new table to organize everything. So with that in hand I was able to push through and quite like these two.
This one is on a stretched canvas and was toned with a really dark blue. You can still see that on the sides so even without a frame you can put a couple of nails in the wall and hang it as is.

Here we are with the second of the cranes. Instead of worrying about the color I decided (on the advice of Rank) to go with more of a white on white type of deal. Maybe it’s because this is the second crane but I was really feeling it on this one. This was actually done in one sitting (minus the orange underpainting) and it was soooo nice to get it right and not have to beat it into submission.

How good is that? Nerdy AND sensitive. So, Number 10 is in the books. The 90 left in front of me makes me worried but I’m taking it one painting at a time. Which sounds like a bad sitcom.
